Construction Worker Killed When Trench Collapses

A tragic construction accident occurred on February 8 near Sherman Oaks. A construction worker died when he was buried while digging a trench.
The victim, who was believed to be in his 30s, was digging inside a trench that was 8 feet deep and two feet wide. He was using hand tools in an attempt to find the sewer line that came from the street. The victim was working by himself at the time, and he was not discovered immediately. He was found unconscious and covered in dirt up to his neck at the time firefighters arrived. He was declared dead a few minutes later.
This tragic accident highlights how dangerous the construction industry can be for workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction industry ranks first among all industries for the rate of fatal occupational injuries. The construction industry ranks fifth among all industries for the rate of non-fatal occupational injuries. There were 816 construction workers killed on the job in the U.S. in 2009 alone.
However, there are ways to avoid being injured in a construction accident. Ninety percent of construction fatalities occur in four categories: being caught between objects, being struck by an object, electrocution and falls. Be sure to take advantage of any safety programs you are offered, and follow safety rules at all times. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, and know your equipment and use it correctly. If you see anything unsafe, let your employer or OSHA know.
